Check Your Internet Speed

Updated: 10/5/2020 1:35 PM

Information travels to computers from the Internet at speeds that are measured in kilobytes per second (kbps). This is referred to as your bandwidth. Vonage recommends minimum upload speed of 90 kilobytes per second or greater per phone line to attain the highest audio quality. A lower upload speed can affect the quality of your calls.

Test Your Internet Connection Speed

If your Internet connection speed is too slow, you may experience problems with your Vonage service, including poor audio quality. Run a speed test to determine the speed of your Internet connection.

NOTE: Latest versions of Adobe Flash Player and Java may be required to run the speed test in some browsers.

Causes of a Slow Internet Connection

Some Internet Service Providers provide multiple levels of types of services and connection speeds.  Other reasons for slow Internet speeds include:

  • Multiple sources are using the same Internet connection.  For example, someone may be playing video games while music is streaming or the web cam is in use while software is being uploaded or downloaded through the Internet.
  • Phone adapter, modem, or router is overheating due to poor ventilation.
  • Wiring is damaged or connectors are loose.

Adjust Your Bandwidth

With your Vonage service, you can increase or decrease your bandwidth.  For more information, see Bandwidth Saver.
